Berlin, Europe 2011, Day 17

We were up fairly early, considering that it was a Saturday morning in Berlin. Anne and I spent the day hitting the pavement and seeing the sights. We finally mastered the U-Bahn system. The day started in search of breakfast and coffee. We settled on a deli near Freidrichstrasse. It was disappointing, but gave us the requisite caffeine.

The first stop was Museum der Dinge, which literally means “Museum of Things”. The museum has over 20,000 things. They are mostly household items organized in a way to make thoughtful comment on the art in which we live. Anne commented that it looked like an organized version of her grandmother’s house.

Next, we attempted to go to Museum of Childhood and Youth. It looked like it had been abandoned, and there were no signs, so we didn’t spend too much time there, even though it took us forever to get there because I kept leading us on the wrong train.

We went to Checkpoint Charlie. There was an hour wait for the museum, so we went to an Italian restaurant around the corner. We accidentially ordered a liter of wine, whoops. The museum was actually really good. The guidebook said that it was a little tacky, but it really made me thankful to be born in the west. The museum detailed all the efforts made to build the wall, and cross it.

After the museum, Anne got us lost three times (so it wasn’t just my fault).  I also decided to finally go "inside" the Holocaust Memorial.  I had seen it many times, we live right next door.  But, this was my first time to go get "lost" in the confusion and waves that the sleek memorial produce.  It was a truly disorientating experience.

Anne and I had dinner at Oderquelle, which was quite delicious. That evening, we went to Klub der Republik. It was one of those places where you have to do up some secret stairs and through some shady courtyard and then there is a bumping DJ inside. They serve a bottled, chilled Mate Tea which was really interesting (that would not fly in Uruguay).
